You Know You Love… Fashion

Chronicling the style of Gossip Girl

Still here August 21, 2008

Oh hai, interwebs.

So here’s the thing…recapping an episode takes a long-ass time.  I would love to spend said time watching GG epsiodes, making note of all the fashions, screencapturing them (which is harder than it seems), and then writing the posts but, uh, I don’t really have the time anymore.  But the snark!  It is still in me and wants to come out and play!  So if someone wants to play Jenny to my Blair and give me a hand with this project, I’m all ears.  Otherwise, I’ll keep plodding along as real life permits.  I’ll probably just skip the rest of season one and go right to season two when it starts (SEPTEMBER 1st OMG!!!)

Dare Devil, 1 of 4 – Serena February 28, 2008

Episode Synopsis: Serena and Dan go on a date. Blair intimidates Little J, and Jenny comes through. It’s only temporary, though. No one gets laid, but there is some brief girl-on-girl action.

Not much Serena in this episode…

Rock n’ roll is in the blood (what with Lily having been a groupie and all) and Serena channels that with this cool leather jacket and messy tie.

This is her date outfit. Except, it’s not, as you’ll see soon. She’s kind of got a southwestern thing going on here with the bag and the silver earrings. Interesting top, too.

Long shot. Silly girl, don’t you know those long scarves can be dangerous? Just as Isadora Duncan.

So, here’s the outfit she ended up wearing on the date. LOVE IT!

Uh-oh. Do NOT love the white tights. They remind me of ballet recitals. Bare legs would have been a better option.

Two kids out on the town. Aren’t they a charming couple?

Dare Devil, 2 of 4 – Blair February 28, 2008

This is one of those hilarious costume-y moments on Gossip Girl. One can almost imagine Blair standing before her closet, hands on hips, mulling over the day’s plans. “Time to give orders. Better put on a schoolmarm outfit.” Nice wedge heels, though. I have a similar pair, and they are great, especially when you need to wear formal shoes to an event held on the grass.

Please note her manicure. This is the right way to do it. Red nailpolish should only be worn on SHORT nails! If you’re wearing bright polish on long nails, I’m going to assume you charge by the hour.

Oh goodness…I am in LOVE with this sweater!

I mean…sequined argyle! Brilliant! Nice bow headband, too. Those sweet little bows that she’s so fond of wearing are such great juxtaposition to her decidedly un-sweet personality.

Now we’re at the sleepover. It’s the social event of the year, according to Blair. This confuses me, because I thought Kiss on the Lips was the social event of the year. Or isn’t it the cotillion? How can there be three “social events of the year” in the space of a few months? Perhaps the world of GG operates on the Mercurial calendar, where one of their years is equal to 87.97 Earth days. When they start celebrating multiple Christmases and Spring Breaks, that’s when we know they’ve officially gone all Sweet Valley High on us.

Anyway, the sleepover. I know when we had slumber parties back in the day, we always used to make up dance routines. I guess people are still doing that, because here’s Blair, all set for a can-can number:

This is better. I like the sleeves. Also, I love how she tries to act sophisticated by serving martinis, but then holds the glass with both hands, like a child. Oh Blair…you’re still a kid!

Hee! Blair puts on a very funny act at Eric’s treatment facility, playing the part of an Rx junkie. Not crazy about the plastic bangles, but the red jacket looks good with the black dress, shown above.

Dare Devil, 3 of 4 – Jenny February 28, 2008

Look, Little J gets her very own recap!

I apologize for the blurry pic, but check out this school outfit. She’s rocking the plastic bangles and some chartreuse tights, which appear to be patterned. Crazy kid.

Here’s what she wore to Blair’s sleepover. Don’t get too attached to this outfit, because she’s about to go on a little wardrobe whirlwind…

“Too Beyonce” declares Blair. Personally, I think she looks very Miami or L.A.

“Too Mary Kate.” Yes, I agree with that. Little J need not wear Big Shades.

“Too Hannah Montana.” I just recently learned of Hannah Montana, so I’ll trust Blair’s assessment. I think it makes her look like an average mall-rat teenager.

Jenny decides to ditch the sleepover and go to the big school dance. No, I’m kidding. She’s still at the sleepover. This is what she’s chosen to wear for the rest of the night. Yes, seriously.

And here’s the coat she put over it. I’m torn. Does it look like something they carry in the old-lady section of department stores, or is it retro and trendy? You decide.

Long shot.

The Eleanor Waldorf jacket, which Jenny has been dared to steal. They sure do love yellow on this show.

Victorious J, in the jacket. It looks nice on her. Oh, and see that fierce look in her eyes? Yeah, that’s the last time you’ll see it, ‘cause she goes right back to being meek Little J in the next episode. So disappointing.

Dare Devil, 4 of 4 – All the Rest February 28, 2008

Filed under: katy&isabel, lily, minions, season 1 epi 5, the guys — SecondCityJen @ 12:35 pm

Whoa, Dan! Been working out? Your shoulders look huge!

I like this jacket less upon closer inspection. It’s a little too Members Only for my taste.

Dapper Dan, ready to pick Serena up on their Big Date. Interesting pattern on his shirt. It reminds me of…um…ohhhh…what were those things called? Not amebas, not paramecium…the little cells with a whip at the end. Anyone know what I’m talking about? Was it just me who slept through science class?

I’m pretty sure I have this shirt, except in blue. At any rate, Lily is looking very UES here, what with her status bag and Hermes belt.

I call this a Serious Bag, because you only carry it when something Serious is about to occur. Very good for parent-teacher meetings, court proceedings, job interviews, and of course, for ditching your kid at a rehab center.

Cute chocolate and pink nightie.

A great example of Rock Lily meets UES Lily. She’s got the great leather jacket (like daughter, like mother) but is also carrying a Birkin bag

Should’ve left the jacket on. This shirt does absolutely nothing for her. The cut and the color are both awful.

Squeee! The K&I letters are back! Check out I’s cute tights. They’re a little Lolita, but that’s probably the point. I also like her hat. Don’t care for K’s long shorts.

So, you thought Jenny’s sleepover dress was silly? Check out K&I’s dresses.

Ok, these girls FREAK ME OUT. I don’t know their names, but I’ve started referring to them as The Minions. They’re so Children of the Corn, no?

Apparently one of them is moonlighting on Real Housewives of Orange County. Ha! Kidding again! This is at Blair’s sleepover.

Outfit #2 for the party. I have nothing to say about this.

Group shot. What the HELL is K wearing??

Bad News Blair, 1 of 3 – Serena February 8, 2008

Filed under: gossip girl, season 1 epi 4, serena — SecondCityJen @ 4:32 pm

Episode Synopsis: Blair is happy, then sad, then resolute.  Eleanor is a bitch, then bitchier. Serena is nice, then taken advantage of, then poses for silly photos.  Dan is consoling.  Chuck is heroic, and also gets laid.

This was an awesome episode, fashion-wise. Lots of stuff that shows off Eric Daman’s genius. I suppose it’s to be expected in an episode where the storyline figures around Eleanor Waldorf’s clothing line. In reality, Eleanor’s clothing is by real-life designer Abigail Lorick.

Been to the shops lately? You may have noticed that yellow is HUGE this spring, and GG is true to life. Sorry if it doesn’t look good on you! There’s some cute stuff going on to the left, but the print on those dresses to the far right appears to be seriously fug.
0104_clothes.jpg

On to the story. We open with Blair’s dream sequence, in which Serena plays the bad girl. It’s fun to see her in this persona. What she’s wearing is almost identical to what Blair wore to her mother’s party in the pilot:
0104_serena1.jpg

The girls go shopping in NoLIta, with Serena in faded jeans and a denim vest over a simple tank. Here’s a publicity still that has her holding a dog. I’m pretty sure it’s an actual dog, and not one of those “faux dog” bags. Obviously this didn’t make it into the episode.:
0104_serena2.jpg

Her purse looks really uncomfortable. I can’t imagine it would feel good on your shoulder. I do like the beads, though:
0104_serena3.jpg

I have mixed feelings about her shoes. Are those spats? I thought we only saw those in 19th century period films and on marching band members.
0104_serena4.jpg

I call this the Bouncy Dress, because she bounces around so damn much in it. It was so hard to get a decent screen shot, so here’s all I’ve got. Cute skyline print at the bottom.:
0104_serena5.jpg

I like the necklace. Also, lavender is very flattering on her.:
0104_serena6.jpg

Her bag is straight out of the 80s. I’m pretty sure I had something similar. Knowing me, I probably used it for My Little Pony transportation. There may have been a Wham! tape in there and perhaps some strawberry flavored Bonne Bell as well.:
0104_serena8.jpg

Her dress from the photo shot. Pretty cute, although not everyone can pull off a bubble skirt. I like the pale lavender sash.:

0104_serena9.jpg

The purple shoes go well. Purple seems to be her thing for this episode.:

0104_serena10.jpg

So, apparently that wasn’t a dress, it was a top and skirt, since here she is wearing the top with jeans. She’s about to blow this popsicle stand, so are we to assume she gets to keep the clothes?:
0104_serena11.jpg

Soft, butter colored leather bag. Perfect for stowing all of your worldly possessions:
0104_serena12.jpg

This is a fun look, but I’ll bet it’s very difficult to pull off in real life. I’ll comment more on that in the Blair post for this episode.:
0104_serena13.jpg

Unique back – I like how the belt comes across the skin.:
0104_serena14.jpg

Yay! It’s my favorite Serena hairstyle, this time with a mod polka-dot scarf!

Bad News Blair, 2 of 3 – Blair February 8, 2008

Filed under: blair, gossip girl, season 1 epi 4 — SecondCityJen @ 4:17 pm

Blair, why so pale? Did Makeup forget to apply some color, or are they deliberately going for a sallow look? Then again, this is supposed to be a dream sequence, and a bad dream, at that.

In this tribute to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, (What’s with the possessive, Truman Capote? The proper name is “Tiffany” without the apostrophe-S.) Blair wears a modern twist on Audrey’s pearls.:
0104_blair1.jpg

Long shot:
0104_blair2.jpg

Cool sunglasses – love the white on the sides.:
0104_blair3.jpg

Ok, back to real life. Remember in a previous episode when I wondered if Blair slept in flowy lingerie? Well, apparently she does. I like the navy/aqua combo:
0104_blair4.jpg

See? She just woke up…and without bed-head, at that!:
0104_blair5.jpg

Out shopping with Serena, Blair sports a very cute dress and fabulous loafer inspired stilettos. The sunglasses from her dream would be perfect with this ensemble.:
0104_blair6.jpg

Preparing for her Eleanor Waldorf photo shoot, Blair goofs around with friends in a lovely cream dress.
0104_blair7.jpg

Her headband matches the sash….
0104_blair8.jpg

…which coordinates with the patterned tights. I wish I could wear this color, but alas, it’s best on brunettes.
0104_blair8a.jpg

At the photo shoot. This is ok – has a very 1940s flair to it. I think the hat and gloves make it look costume-y.:
0104_blair9.jpg

Closeup of the sequined hat, which would be not costume-y with a different outfit.:
0104_blair10.jpg

When I’m not judging Gossip Girl fashions, I judge drill team competitions. I can’t tell you how many dance groups wear this exact outfit for their lyrical productions. Cue the angst ridden Tori Amos music.:
0104_blair11.jpg

Huh. I like this shirtdress from the top up. The bottom makes it look frumpy. Cute T-strap shoes (again with the 1940s):
0104_blair12.jpg

Here we can see some more detail on the shirtdress. I still maintain that it looks better from the waist up.:
0104_blair13.jpg

Here’s Blair’s Big Bag:
0104_blair14.jpg

Ever see a dress on the rack that looks super cute, but as soon as you try it on, it shows every bulge and ripple? This is that dress. Seriously, I don’t know a non-celeb who would look good in this. Leighton Meester is not a chubby girl, but even she just barely pulls this off.:
0104_blair15.jpg

And it’s backless. Given the clingy properties of the fabric, I hope it has some sort of bra cups at the front.:

Bad News Blair, 3 of 3 – All the Rest February 8, 2008

Filed under: eleanor, gossip girl, katy&isabel, season 1 epi 4, the guys — SecondCityJen @ 1:53 pm

Your eyes do not deceive you.  This is not the same Eleanor as in the pilot.  May I present Queen Eleanor II?  Anyway, she gets a lot of face time in this episode, so let’s start with her.

Nice pearls. I have to say, overall Eleanor does classic-yet-contemporary jewelry very well.:

0104_eleanor1.jpg

SO nice to see her in a color other than white, off-white, ecru, ivory, eggshell, cream….:

Goodness, doesn’t she look panicked! In this scene she’s in her nightgown, but is still wearing her earrings. At first I thought they were the Elsa Peretti starfish, but I don’t think they are.:

Another non-white color! She’s dressed in black-on-black houndstouth, ready to deliver the bad news to Blair. Looks like her only jewelry is her reading glasses.:

K&I in Blair’s dream, dressed as French maids. I like the chunky necklaces.:

What a great color combo on Isabel (or it Katy? Whatever.)

The other one wears it well, too. I still like the first one better though. Should I feel bad not being able to remember their individual names?

Tee-hee! Eleanor’s panic-stricken assistant is totally channeling the 1960s office girl. Love it! She can take this outfit and go work as an extra for Mad Men.:
0104_assistant.jpg

And her other assistant is just a little bit 80s, what with her baggy top and contrasting shoe/tight combo.:
0104_assistant2.jpg

Rarr! Hello Rufus, I’m here to buy some art. Then I will jump your bones.

Ok, that didn’t actually happen, but it looks like it’s about to. As I recall, there was some flirting going on, and possibly a date that was set. I don’t remember for sure and I’m too lazy to go back and check. Her earring are awesome.:

Sister, that is one HUGE bag. I’m guessing this actress is a dancer, judging by her overall lithe-ness and huge muscle bulge in the quad.

Chuck dresses for his new job as a soda jerk. All he needs are arm suspenders.:

Will that be a sarsaparilla, or an egg crème, ma’am?:

Ignore the fact that it looks like he’s catching flies, and let’s pull focus below the neck. Love the purple shirt and ascot combo.

Chuck, WTF? Did the soda counter give you time off to appear in Sweatin’ to the Oldies?
0104_boys2.jpg

Oh, hi Dan. You were really, really boring in this episode. This is the most exciting thing you wore. Way to match the hallway.:

Oh, hi Nate. You were also boring in this episode, although this shirt showed off the color of your eyes.:

BTW, Chuck was having a big party. Here’s what everyone wore.:
0104_boys.jpg

Oh, I see he invited Cute Token Black Guy! That’s so inclusive of him.:
0104_tbg.jpg

He also invited some hos. The one on the right is wearing a bejeweled bra. I’ll bet the one on the left is, too, but we don’t get to find out because this is the CW, not Cinemax.

I just changed RSS feeds, so if you were previously subscribed to the WordPress feed, here’s the new one, on Feedburner:

Feedburner makes it easier for me to see how many subscribers I have, and I’m all about knowing how much attention I get. Blair and I have that in common.

Working on episode 4 now…should be up in the next few days!

Poison Ivy, 1 of 3 – Serena January 30, 2008

Filed under: gossip girl, season 1 epi 3, serena — SecondCityJen @ 10:55 pm

Episode Synopsis: Dan is discouraged, Blair is a bitch, and Serena is humiliated, but in the end they hug it out. In a surprising turn of events, Chuck gets laid.

I must note that this episode kicks off with a très amusant a capella arrangement of “Glamorous” by Fergie. Now, I was in choir back in the day and can assure you that we never sang about being flossy, flossy whilst in front of the entire student body. Then again, I didn’t grow up on the Upper East Side.

Their hands in recital pose makes it all the more hilarious:

Anyway.

Serena jumps out of a cab looking good. Those boots are to die for.:

Closeup of boots. Pls do not attempt unless you are long-limbed and skinny:

Time for field hockey, so Serena throws her hair up into a ponytail. And by “throw it up” I mean she wrapped her hair around the elastic and then added a thin purple ribbon. So cute – I love wrapped ponytails. Of interest is that in this scene, Blair is wearing an identical purple ribbon. :

Time for the Ivy reception, and Serena’s sporting a lovely dress. Perhaps a bit casual for the event, but wouldn’t it be cute for brunch?:

She pairs it with some Mary Janes that are a tad too clunky, in my opinion. They’re not horrible, though.:

Closeup of her equestrian scarf. Serena needs to wear her hair this way, like, a lot.:

Carly Simon, is that you? Seriously though, I love this hat. It’s a good color on her, and the band (patent textured leather?) adds a touch of shimmer.:

Alas, my love for this outfit is only from the neck up. I’m pretty sure my mom had something like this shirt it in her closet, leftover from the 70s. Wasn’t cute then – isn’t cute now. It probably wouldn’t be so offensive as a beach coverup, but it doesn’t work here.:
